Professional Biography 

Deborah L. Cabaniss, M.D. is Clinical Professor of Psychiatry at the Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons and the Director of Psychotherapy Training in the Department of Psychiatry at Columbia. In that role she teaches psychodynamic psychotherapy to residents and coordinates teaching and supervising of all psychotherapy in the residency. She is the winner of numerous teaching awards, including the Edith Sabshin award from the American Psychoanalytic Association and teacher of the year awards from residents and candidates at Columbia. She has published numerous articles related to psychoanalytic and psychiatric education and has just finished a term on the editorial board of the Journal of the American Psychoanalytic Association. She is also a Training and Supervising Analyst at the Columbia University Center for Psychoanalytic Training and Research. She is a graduate of Yale University and the Columbia University College of Physicians, and she completed her psychoanalytic training at Columbia. She has conducted faculty workshops for the Baltimore/Washington Center for Psychoanalysis, the Washington Center for Psychoanalysis, The St. Louis Psychoanalytic Institute, and the Albert Einstein department of psychiatry. In October 2009, she was the Teichner scholar-in-residence at the Vanderbilt Department of Psychiatry. She is currently writing a book on psychodynamic psychotherapy for residents and trainees that will be published by Wiley Blackwell.
