Dr. Drescher is in private practice in Chelsea in New York City. He is an independent scholar whose work in human sexuality, sexual conversion therapies, gender, and gender identity is nationally and internationally recognized. He has written a textbook, Psychoanalytic Therapy and The Gay Man, edited more than a score of books and written eighty peer-reviewed articles and book chapters dealing with LGBT health and mental health issues. He is a frequent media spokesperson about these issues as well. He has served as an expert witness and consultant on important cases dealing with LGBT rights.
Dr. Drescher is Past President of the Group for Advancement of Psychiatry, Distinguished Life Fellow of the American Psychiatric Association, and Past President of APA’s New York County Psychiatric Society. He served on APA’s DSM-5 Workgroup on Sexual and Gender Identity Disorders and serves on the World Health Organization’s Working Group on Classification of Sexual Disorders and Sexual Health addressing sex and gender diagnoses in WHO's forthcoming (2018) revisions of the International Classification of Diseases (ICD-11). He is a Clinical Professor of Psychiatry, Columbia University, College of Physicians and Surgeons, Faculty Member, Columbia University Center for Psychoanalytic Training and Research, Clinical Supervisor and Adjunct Professor, New York University Postdoctoral Program in Psychotherapy and Psychoanalysis, and Training and Supervising Analyst at William Alanson White Institute. He is board certified in psychiatry by American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology and certified as a Fellow in Adult Psychoanalysis by American Board of Psychoanalysis. He is Emeritus Editor of the Journal of Gay and Lesbian Mental Health and serves on editorial boards of seven academic journals. His publications have been translated into Italian, Portuguese, French, Spanish, Russian, Arabic, Finnish, and German.
