After attending the University of California at Berkeley, Dr. Scheftel graduated with a degree in English Literature from New York University. Prior to graduate school Dr. Scheftel was a special education teacher. Dr. Scheftel obtained a Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology from the City University of New York and did two years of internship training at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine. Dr. Scheftel continued to work in the Einstein complex at North Central Bronx Hospital, variously in adult and pediatric consultation liaison, as co-director of internship training and senior psychologist on the inpatient training unit. Dr. Scheftel has been in private practice since 1985. Dr. Scheftel spent three years in psychoanalytic training at the NYU Postdoctoral Program before her training at Columbia. Dr. Scheftel is a graduate of the Columbia Psychoanalytic Center’s Child Analysis Program where she was the first “child only” candidate. Dr. Scheftel is a graduate of the Columbia Psychoanalytic Center’s Parent Infant Program as well of the William Alanson White Institute’s Eating Disorders Program. Dr. Scheftel consults with nursery schools and has been a school psychologist.
