Affiliate Scholars Program

Through the Affiliate Scholars Program, scholars in a variety of fields have the opportunity of deepening their understanding of psychoanalytic theory by taking classes at the Center in our Adult and Child Psychoanalytic programs.  Over the years, Affiliate Scholars have been professors, authors, scientists, social scientists, and graduate students who have a particular research or writing project underway.

Each Affiliate Scholar's course of study is tailored to the particular project.  In consultation with an advisor from the Psychoanalytic Center faculty, Affiliate Scholars select classes that will most enrich their ongoing research or writing, choosing from among regular course offerings and electives that vary from year to year.  Generally they enroll in two classes per semester for a year, though some have chosen to extend their time at the Psychoanalytic Center to two years.

At the Center, Affiliate Scholars take classes along with psychiatrists and psychologists who are engaged in clinical psychoanalytic training.  Both students and faculty find the interdisciplinary composition of classes intellectually enlivening for all.

Columbia University graduate students may also wish to consider the Psychoanalytic Studies Program based at the Morningside campus.  Clinicians who wish to idevelop their understanding and improve their skills in working with patients should explore our clinical training programs in psychotherapy or psychoanalysis.
