THE PROGRAM
The Columbia University Center for Psychoanalytic Training and Research offers a two-year clinical training program in psychoanalytically oriented psychotherapy for psychiatrists and clinical psychologists with a Ph.D. or a Psy.D. degree. This program provides advanced instruction and supervision in psychodynamic psychotherapy by members of our psychoanalytic faculty chosen for their superior teaching ability. Weekly seminars provide participants with an in-depth survey of psychoanalytic models, mental functioning and psychopathology as well as comprehensive training in the theory and technique of psychodynamic psychotherapy. Seminars combine discussion of readings from the psychoanalytic and psychodynamic literature with presentation of clinical material by the instructors and class participants. Seminars are complemented by individual supervisory sessions in which participants discuss patients from their private practices with experienced psychoanalytic supervisors. Students are encouraged to see the patients they present in supervision two or three times per week when appropriate, however this is not required.
The educational program consists of 30 weekly seminars and 30 individual psychotherapy supervisory sessions each year. Seminars are held from 7:30 - 9:00 on Monday nights. Supervisory sessions are 45 minutes long and are held at the supervisor's office, scheduled at the mutual convenience of the supervisor and supervisee. The fee for the program is $4000 per year payable in two installments. Students have the option of arranging for a second supervisor for an additional fee of $1800 per year. This program does not qualify for the Columbia University Tuition Exemption Program.
